Getting Ready for the WFATT World Congress XI

The World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT) World Congress is just under a month away! This three-day event will be filled with hands-on workshops, lectures, and networking opportunities for athletic therapists, athletic trainers and allied health professionals from around the world.

Hosted in partnership by WFATT, CATA and the Manitoba Athletic Therapists Association (MATA), World Congress XI will be held in Winnipeg, Manitoba from May 5-7. On behalf of CATA and our partners, we are excited to share this will be an in-person event. After two years of being apart, we’re ready for the opportunity to gather together and continue to build on our skills and gain new experiences. This will be an event you don’t want to miss.

Not yet registered, or curious about how to make the most of your trip? We’ve shared some of the top reasons to help you get ready for the World Congress!

1. Participate in workshops and grow your skills

Dedicated to supporting athletic trainers, therapists and allied professionals, the World Congress features a number of educational, networking and social opportunities designed to support your work in athletic therapy. You can connect with other experts in the field as well as athletic therapists from all over the world to share knowledge. Gain hands-on experiences and participate in interactive workshops during the World Congress.

Some of the keynotes and educational sessions to look forward to at this event are:

  • Keynote Lecture: “Live Your Best” - Tim Hague Sr. shares how to meet a challenging life event like a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease and still succeed living your best life.
  • Keynote Lecture: “The Road to Recovery: Perspectives from the Field” - Sue Falsone explores recovery as it relates to patient care as well as athletic therapists. Sue is the first female head athletic trainer in any of the four major sports in the US (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA), and we’re looking forward to her sharing her insights!
  • “Cupping with Movement” - Both cupping and movement therapies are used in training rooms and clinics daily, but they are rarely used together. Learn more about integrating cupping with movement to obtain better outcomes for your clients.
  • “Compression Band Flossing” - Learn more about the use of ‘compression band floss’ through skin/fascial/nerve gliding to help reduce tissue swelling, improve movement and modulate pain.
  • Visit the conference page to learn more about the exciting sessions you can attend.

2. Socialize with fellow professionals and learn from great exhibitors and sponsors

In-person networking and socializing will be a feature of this year’s World Congress, with plenty of opportunities to meet up, chat and learn taking place in the Exhibit Hall. Don’t miss out on your chance to meet up with fellow professionals to reconnect and learn more about what’s happening in the field around the world.

First up is the Welcome Social on the Thursday night. This fun, casual event allows us all to celebrate being together and network with other professionals in the field! Those of us with tickets are also looking forward to the now-sold-out Ale & Cocktail Trolley on the Saturday.

We’ll also have the opportunity to gather for meals and breaks to see old friends and make new connections. With the reception and meals taking place in the Exhibit Hall, it’ll be easy to see what’s on offer from our great sponsors to help augment your professional work. You’ll also want to look out for the posters in the Exhibit Hall: on display all day Friday, with presentations on Friday afternoon. Throughout the event, chat with exhibitors and experts to learn about their latest products. You’ll have plenty of time to collaborate and bring something new home with you!

3. Celebrate and engage with fellow CATA members!

CATA is partnering with WFATT and MATA to host this year’s World Congress, and we’re excited to have 4 Canadian athletic therapists and sharing their knowledge and expertise during the event’s sessions alongside other professionals.

CAT(C) Jonathan Maister will be running a hands-on workshop “Sport Event Massage” on May 5.

CAT(C) Gabrielle Boulding shares her experience in her lecture “Therapist-Athlete Relationship and Kinesiophobia, Injury Recovery, Return to Play” on May 6.

CAT(C) Phil Fait, PhD presents his session “Aerobic Exercise Recovery Following a Sports-Related Concussion” on May 6.

CAT(C) Rebecca Swan takes the stage on May 7 to share her lecture “Trauma-Informed Care in Athletic Therapy.”

CATA members will also be recognized for their knowledge and skills during the annual CATA Awards Gala on May 6. We want to celebrate all the amazing work their therapists have accomplished, so join us to mark member achievements.
